PC Instructions

Both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) allow some level of cookie verification.

In Netscape 4.x and Microsoft Ineternet Explorer 4.x. They have menu options that allow you to accept all, some, or none of your incoming cookies. In addition, the "warn before accepting" feature is still present in both, if you want to screen your incoming cookies.

In Netscape 4.x, go to the Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced menu.
You will see all of the above choices.

In Netscape 6.x, go to the Edit --> Preferences --> Privacy & Security --> Cookies menu.
You will see all of the above choices.



In Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x, go to the View --> Internet Options --> Advanced menu. There you can accept all, warn before accepting, or reject all.
NOTE: you should upgrade to at least Internet Explorer 5.5

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and 6.x has a lot of menu and dialog changes.
Go to the Tools --> Internet Options --> Security tab.
In there, you can choose the security level for 4 different browsing conditions:
  • Internet Sites
  • Local Sites
  • Trusted Sites
  • Restricted Sites
Select "Internet," and click on Custom Level, you'll get a dialog box, scroll down to the Cookies section where you can Specifies how you want Internet Explorer to handle a permanent "cookie"
A cookie is a file created by the site that stores information about you on your computer.

To specify that you want Internet Explorer to accept cookies without prompting you first, click Enable.

To specify that you want Internet Explorer to warn you if you are about to receive a cookie from a Web site, click Prompt.

To specify that you do not want to allow cookies to be stored on your computer by Web sites, and that existing cookies on your computer cannot be read by Web sites, click Disable.

Once a cookie is rejected, it is thrown out and not saved to memory or disk.



In America OnLine (AOL) for Windows, Internet Explorer is built in BUT is directly tied to the Internet Explorer installed on your Windows Machine.
To change the cookie setting you would (for Windows)
click on Start --> Settings --> Internet options -->Security tab.
In there, you can choose the security level for 4 different browsing conditions:
  • Internet Sites
  • Local Sites
  • Trusted Sites
  • Restricted Sites

  • Click My AOL

  • Click on the Advanced settings button
